Combat message types:
- you hit target
- you miss target
- you get hit by something
- you get missed by something
- you block/parry something

You may have conquered my worlds, but I destroyed them!

I like the V5 quick text but with floating as well, maybe.

I like the old style, but floating sounds good too...maybe even a mix of the 2.  if players had the option could they use more than 1?

I like seeing it in chat, the floating text annoys me when it covers what I am trying to look at.

by floating you mean popping up over the target's head right?  want to be clear after reading Sacrifice's post...

I like the idea of a combat tab to show everything. Aside from that, I think floating text should be customizable.

3 options: No floating text, show only crits, show all damage

And that would just be for damage either dealt TO or BY you. I don't know if there should be floating text over other players when they attack stuff... I'd think no.

Also, I think it should be pretty small and unobtrusive, might take some work to get it feeling right (v5 felt a little obnoxious)

I meant like v2 floating text, where the text came up from right above the chat box. I always turned it off. If you mean the floating text like in games where the damage pops up next to there name then that would be fine as long as it doesn't linger for to long

One other nice "polish" feature is adding an animation to the vitals bars. It's absolutely something that might be done with finishing touches rather than initial implementation, but it helps with making it clear when something changes.

Anyways, if you have a health bar at 100/100 health, a solid green bar. Then you take 20 damage. Instead of simply changing the bar to be 80% of it's normal width, it could be smoothly transitioned to go down over .25 seconds or whatever. It's a small thing but I've found it helps a lot.

I sometimes untick the "isolate system messages" box, but it gets annoying having all that in chat when you're fishing...then again I never really had a problem with text on screen over the chat box.  on the other hand, I'm  always a crafter so the only time I really have a lot of messages on screen I'm just standing still in a relatively safe spot...

@Mongo, what if you get hit a second time in that .25 seconds?  some weapons have enough speed to hit more than that(unarmed?) you could be dead and still have a half full health bar...I could see the slow version you want with using a potion, ie your health/mana/stamina goes up slowly after using the potion instead of all at once.  maybe with .1 second ticks for potions and instead of getting 50 right away you get 5 every tick?

When I was a fighter I would always have this problem where I would be fighting 2-3 things at once and it would cover half my screen with hits and melee defense.

And don't even get me started about when you were in a siege surrounded by 8 monsters.

There's a way it can be done where it still works.. so like... ok.

Let's say you start at 100%

Then you get hit for 20% damage. Immediately after being hit, there is a clear black bar to indicate the end of your current health as well as the dark green area. The light green represents the health you lost.

So, assuming you're not hit again, over the next .2 seconds or whatever, the light green area gets smaller to indicate the loss until it reaches the black bar.

Now lets say you get hit again. Immediately the black bar is updated to represent your current health, the light green "shadow" is left behind to indicate where it was before

The shadow stars diminishing

But then lets say you get hit again while that is still happening. Simply update the black bar position to represent current health, add to the light green shadow and probably re-calculate the rate at which the shadow diminishes (should be faster now)

This is definitely a "Ok I'm done with the game, just wanna add some finishing touches" feature, but .. it was kinda related to what we were talking about so ... yeah.

Ooohh, neat idea to have potions slow acting or at least not 100% in an instant. Like 25% effect per second for life, stam and mana.

Sounds like ppl want options for the combat messages...and that sounds good.

Some kinda animation or a flash on the life bar sounds easy enough.

how did I know you were going to love that?  just no more of that "feature" you added that made potions useless after you used a few :P

@Mongo, I don't get the point, but meh

Greatest, it's so you don't need to watch your health bar the entire time to know what happened. Having a shadow of the damage taken means you have a much better chance of seeing what happened when you glance to your vitals.

This was the first result on YouTube when I searched for "Health Bar Animation" and it happened to do the same thing I was talking about
