I'm working on weapons and balancing now...but I'm never a fighter!  so a few quick questions to those of you who are:

1: how should skill level for next weapon progress?  I was thinking every 25 at first, but that might be way too many...

2: should I do 3 weapons at each skill level(1 fast low damage, 1 balanced, and 1 slow high damage) or should there be more?

3: there are usually a bunch of weapon skills and I don't think all of them get used...since I'm pretty much rebuilding the system what are some skills that could be omitted, and are there any you can think of that should be added?  I was thinking of adding a polearm skill for halberds and the like, don't think I've seen it as a skill before.

1. Every 25 points would be ok if you were to do #2 because obviously you'd have to include quite a few weapons, but I think that's too small of a gap. 50-100 is a better choice.

2. No. Don't add 3 weapons at each skill level. This is essentially what Mickey did with weapons in V2 and most of them never get used. Boosts/potions/jewels or whatever you would have on your server already make a good portion of low level weapons obsolete and in combination with that players always tend to pick the weapon that does the most damage regardless of speed.

3. This one is up to you but I find that each weapon skill always has at least one person willing to use it. New weapon skills or combining some skills/weapons in to one grouping isn't a bad idea though.

so 1 balanced weapon every 50, and an alternative every 75?  I don't want things too bland, I like choices...

ie: for swords
noob sword at 1 skill
xiphos(balanced) at 50
cutlass(faster lower damage) at 75
gladius(balanced) at 100
schiavano(balanced) at 150
arming sword(slower higher damage) at 150
saber(balanced) at 200
scimitar(faster less damage) at 225
and so on

edit: and for now names are just place holders...these may be used but I'm really trying to figure out a balance before I add a lot of stuff

It sounds fine to me that way if that's how you want to do it. I agree with you I like choices too but still on almost every server I've played where there has been a variety of weapon choices I would say almost 80% of them never actually get used.

think it would make a difference if the different weapon styles had some bonuses?  ie heavier weapons can also do stam damage, some faster weapons can avoid shields, only balanced weapons can be poisoned?

also I was thinking of adding off hand weapons(equipped in shield spot if you have the off hand skill for that weapon) any clue if that would actually work?

It won't work unless you are using them like shields.

Also if you plan on adding a bunch of weapons remember you can only have 255 unique weapon wear images. (boo)

If you are making multiple tiers of weapons it would be easier to make a skill called "Melee Combat" or something and just put sword/scythe/spear into them. Maybe you make sword 1 range and its the highest DPS. Scythe 2 range and spear 3 range which are weaker.

Oh and you mentioned halberds. They had them in nexus. I think I have a copy of the images if you want to use them.

Weapon specific abilities are good but I would just be careful not to make some of them too overpowered compared to others. It might be easier just to try and stick with what is generally considered to be the norm (mace is stam, scythe has crit, etc)

I played Hex 2(?) years ago when he first openned it...

it had a good attempt to thwart the problem with selling to npcs, but went too far in not allowing any way of making money besides mining gold and smelting it into coins and monster drops...that means as a non smithing crafter you were basicly screwed.  think of an alchemist: you have to farm to get seeds to make potions, but you can't buy land so anyone can come along and harvest your plants.  about a week in as there were  no crafter quests, no "I need <item> please help me" npc folks, and the few people that were mining gold already were keeping it for themselves everyone else was screwed.  yes every non smithing crafter could have remade as a smith, but what is the fun in everyone doing the exact same thing?

I'm still looking for magic suggestions(really not sure which way I'm going with it)!

ps: who started Trinity, and is it actually going to be playable?

The server isn't even a year old yet, I made it so you could get gold being an alch when you requested it. No one has ever requested crafting quests on my server/appeals. I know this because I use to check them every single day. It's gotten a bit harder the past few days now that i'm studying abroad but you can expect to get a response in 2 or 3 days at max.

guess that means its yours?  it doesn't want to update for me, then when it finally stops trying gives me the "itemdef2.dat version conflict" fatal error :D

as far as magic(back to working on it soon) I'm thinking of just doing 1 attack AoE spell and the rest as status effects...ie: fire aoe would do damage, earth aoe would basicly just block movement, ice aoe would be like the ice other spell, electric aoe would add a status effect similar to being drunk(stunned body isn't reacting the way you want).  I was thinking of a wind aoe such as tornadoe that would randomly warp any monsters/players in the effect area a few tiles away, but that would require making a hidden warp item that would spawn with the spell so...too much work.

still taking ideas on it though, I'll check over all the other stuff before I get back to magic just to take a few days for ideas to come in.

Can you shoot over the rocks? Sounds OP in pk against anyone with a shorter range. If you cant shoot over the rocks worthless.

very possible, trap tile that when stepped on makes you drunk...really simple even, problem would be if it gets used in town and every little nooby starts stumbling around being killed.  as I said I'm thinking through the magic system, nothing is written in stone yet.  I'm hoping people will come up with ideas so it isn't just the same spells in every other sever, but a new unique experience that we can all enjoy.
