Single Player Prototype
« on: April 19, 2012, 01:39:09 pm »
Here is what I have been messing with in the past month or so using AGK:

http://rpgwo.com/SandBoxRPG.zip

Use keypad to move around, mouse to select items.

This should give everyone a good idea what to expect from AGK and what I want to implement.

And might as well post my other AGK game here:

This is the graphic style that will be used?
Theoretically, besides the GUI, could a screenshot of this be identical to a screenshot of the completed game?

The graphics are OK but they lack perspective

I wonder how hard it would be to implement dynamic lighting.. would be kinda neat to see shadows calculated based on different light sources.

These graphics are just place holders. They come from reiner's website. He has a bunch of free 2D artwork. I plan to have all new artwork, maybe some taken from V1/V2 that I drew, like some plants. The style I am thinking now is cartoony but haven't tried anything yet.

They do have perspective, it like 45 degrees, isometric unless I don't understand what you mean. I think a 45 degree is a good goal for the final artwork.

Um, V1/V2 has dynamic lighting. The AGK library supports alpha blending so, I should be able to get some good lighting effects. Plus AGK has particle effects so things like fire, magic, blood splatter, etc will be neato.

Ok.. yeah I guess it did. But I'm sure it will be much smoother here.. plus you could emulate the sun as a light source so shadows from trees would move across the grass as the day goes by.

45 degrees sounds just dandy.

Can't wait to see what mana plants look like with fancy particles. Always loved those.

I think the player models are too big. I think you should go for the smaller characters with more fine details. Think more final fantasy and less runescape

I also dislike the run speed of v3 and this version. One thing a 2d mmorpg should have is fluid movement. You would put a little quickness on every char on v1 v2 just because running was ridiculous

speaking of speed, seems like you move faster going at an angle than you do going straight...
why does Fox keep cancelling good shows?

Heres some stuff I've been working on in python the last couple of days. I'm working on dynamic lighting/shadows atm.

I also have movement in all directions finished but I removed the character because I'm waiting on the animations.

I still need to make some adjustments to the shadows such as distance and angle. But I'm going to have it so the shadows move throughout the day also.

The sandbox game remind's me of v3 for some reason :). But the second game is a little CPU consuming :(
Oldish player, not much else you need to know. Why are you even reading this, you should stop.. Please stop. Why are you not stopping?

If you want realistic 45 degree camera angle,
take a look at the following picture:

Notice how the house becomes larger as you look upwards toward the roof.
This is because when viewed from an angle, the upper parts are slightly closer
to the eye and thus appear larger, while lower parts are slightly further away
and thus appear smaller.

Even with the shadows, the image you provided still
conveys an illogical 2D view, not true 45 degree angle perspective.

my game isn't isometric, graphics like this would be impossible with this perspective

How about Diablo 2? They had a neat 'perspective' mode that would actually make it look like your camera was looking 'behind' an object when you moved left/right. It allowed everything to be 2D but give the illusion of 3D.

Food for thought.
