Toadwater 2, Free Mmorpg kinda like Harvest Moon
« on: December 06, 2011, 05:44:16 pm »
Hello, I've played RPGWO off and on for the past five years.  I also played The Chipped Dagger until the dev went MIA.  I thought I would share Toadwater with you guys.

First off, this game isn't for everyone.  Toadwater 2 is a fun sandbox MMORPG where you claim land, grow trees and crops, and do a few quests along the way.

A small description of the game:
Quote
Toadwater... a unique game with a breathtaking array of near photorealistic 3D graphics (reduced to low resolution 2D sprites for your convenience). What makes Toadwater special isn't the fact that you can milk squirrels. Or that you can breed pigeons to carry dwarves around. It's not even that you have to poo regularly, then shovel up the poo and use it as fertilizer, although that is pretty special.

No, what makes Toadwater really special is that all those ugly graphics, the borderline psychotic ideas and the strangely unique charme come together in a consistent, permanent online world that you can carve your own piece out of to fence off, live on, and brag about. Unless you brag too much, then you get raided and mocked.

All it takes is a valid email address (no hotmail) and java.

i wouldnt call it good, interesting, yes, different, definitely, yes, replay value after spending 3 hours trying to grow trees only to fail at making crap to pass the tutorial, little to none. I would recommend this game, only if H&H was down, rpgwo is down, all the good minecraft servers are down, all your people in Towns! 0.37 are dead and you dont feel like restarting, cant play chipped dagger, WOW gets hacked, runescape finally dies, etc. its at the bottom of my list, and I am unbiased.

6 things to make this game better:

1. lose the sandbox rating, as its not an open world when you have everyone "jumping" from noob land and claiming good land
and it doesnt expand on much of the sandbox theme.

2. its unbalanced as all hell. random chancing on skill based creations (very limited, btw) it makes it a grindfest snooze inducing boring tedious event.

3. quests that were stated in the sites description are for paid members, and sinking 5 bucks into a game only to get few quests and a shiny walking stick (yes in order to move you need a walking staff, limited uses, and you cant do anything while moving, and while moving it deals damage, like the desert on Dune, but worse. it basically limits your choices in either moving or standing in place and planting or doing whatever, and praying to god you dont get raided.)

4. make walking normal, movement should ALWAYS be fee actions, not life draining tasks.

5. the in game store sucks for vitals, as if planks and wood cant be bought, which they should be, since you get almost 1 success in every 10 - 20 attempts.

6. kill the effing tutorial frog, nubland should be about learning particular skills, without penalty.

also, try recommending games that actually let you do more than just bump about.

a true sandbox game is unlimited and wide open.

this game you brought us is barely getting a 4/10

and i have played it, and am disappoint.

anyways...

this game is horrid, its very slow. planting trees, waiting for them to grow, or not, etc. is so slow i found myself watching movies while playing this. if you play this, prepare to dedicate a large chunk of time into a game with no real purpose, and to get to land to build on you need to grind level enough to move many screens to get to a plot that may or may not be owned, getting raided cause you set up near them, and getting thrown back to nubland.

back on topic...

what i mean is that unlike fail xp in rpgwo, your trees have a very good chance of dying, until your skill is at 50 or above. tree seeds are dug up, prepare to fail at making a shovel to dig the seeds up, because you get a few seeds digging by hand, but more with a shovel.

and moving does 1 damage, you need trees that have been in the ground for years in game to heal you decently, but fat chance finding them on your trek to find land. you dont claim land, you just put up a fence that can be broken, and your wolf gets raided.

speaking of wolf, you have to have an outhouse, cause of your poo meter.

cant heal further if its full.

actually this is relevant. there are no npc's to interact with other than the tutorial frog, player interaction is solely based on chance encounters that can either get you help or they "kill" you by sending you back to the noob zone or lasso you. most likely your gonna get raped first and then if your dedicated enough, they might actually help out. but dont expect much. in the unwritten rules you have to post on the forum to the person whos land your by. because it would have required 10 extra minutes to implement an in game chat feature.

Not sure why you think you are the authority on the game.  There are several NPCs to interact with when you jump off of cloud world.  You have to be level 60 to become a member, and then all the quests open up for you.

Also, there is no way to "kill" someone.  There has not been a single raid yet this game.

really? ive been playing it since it was toadwater 1, there are no npc's at the jump off point, but a sign telling you to enter the cave. also there have been raids, but people are to pony to announce it. if not, then why can you destroy others works and not implement a land ownership feature. and to get to level 60 you have to spend an ungodly amount of grind time just to get stats worth of the level. so look before you post, cause quite frankly your game is crap. im just stating facts that outweigh whatever good points your delusional mind may think there are. its a lazy attempt at a game, and you should feel bad for spamming every forum you can advertising it, but instead spend the time to make it better. oh wow edicts, lets throw a hungry man a cracker. ffs, i wouldnt buy membership until there is a major overhaul, which is long due. player base is nil and only comparable to the player base of horizon towards the end. so I guess i am the authority of a wolfty game. I feel bad for even wasting time typing this out. your game belongs in the outhouse.

If the game belongs in the outhouse, at least it will make some good poo I can use to fertilize my trees and crops with.

The closest NPC is northwest of the drop off point by ten steps.  Pretty far if you ask me.

I added a feature recently that sends a message to the person being raided, and from that I can tell there hasn't been any raids.  The concept is still in the game though, so it could happen.

I agree it takes a while to get level 60, but there are many players have have flown past that point already.  I'm not asking anyone to pay or buy anything.  Membership is free to anyone that gets to level 60.  People have made mules for specific tasks enough to get to level 60.

There is an update at least every week, I don't consider that a lazy attempt at a game, but hey feel free to think what ever you want.  I can't force you to change your thoughts of anything.

look, its a valid concept, poorly executed, but after reading the wiki's and such, paying for a membership gets you a personal staff and access to quests. unless wiki is lying or its outdated. that needs to be clarified. what im saying is that a game that requires an insane amount of grinding, and then failing, spending more than an hour in tutorial limbo, something needs to be done. There are good points to the game, its original, but you claimed it was harvest moon like, but its not.

to make the game better:

the store needs to sell everything. but to limit people burning past the tutorial, limit access to the shop.

yes there is a nifty raid alert system in place. breaking out before jumping alerts you to it. but the raiding im getting at is watching people walk around your incomplete fence, tearing your stuff up and then sending you back to noob land.

balance the fail/death of trees or crops with the skill level. you cant expect someone to sit around all day to only harvest 4 fir woods, when they burn through 150 seeds.

add a claim feature, just for players to plop down and not worry about some shmuck ruining their wolf. 1 claim, you have to have a fence first.

grass should not burn hp for walking, any grass.

idol fail is too high, it takes between 30 -35 skill points to make the first idol.

add housing as a cheap storage alternative.

random digging should produce more than just worms and 1 type of seeds.

there are good points to this game, i like the style, and concepts, but Travis, what im saying is polish the jewel before displaying it. it could become a good game, but as it stands, its not wonderful. I had 5 of my friends play it, and this is everything they told me. so work harder on it and then spam the hell out of forums about it. it seems rushed.

I tried this game, I've played for about an hour and a half and I'm still on the tutorial(or was, I think your game crashed or something).  I'm currently on the part where I have to build an idol to get level 2(ponderosa pine) seeds.

I have so far:

190 balsam fir seeds
45 white fir seeds
57 ponderosa pine seeds
7 masa bamboo shoots

this game is mostly just sitting there idly waiting.  all you can really do while waiting is dig.  as thats the way to get seeds I don't see the point in this step of the tutorial.  tutorials are great for games.  for a game like this however, the tutorial is overcomplicated. as it has to be done(I haven't found a way to skip it) it really drags down any fun that could be had in the game.  also since it is a tutorial maybe you could have that area play faster since it really is just a click and wait game.

Thank you for the feedback.

I've added several things from your criticism.  Digging now gives several different kinds of seeds.  Walking on grass doesn't cost health.  I changed the formula for planting seeds to make it much easier.  Going to redo the tutorial soon.

The game just went down for a few minutes so we can build the mining area part of the game.  I'm working on changing the tutorial so there is less waiting.  Thanks for the feedback.

travis can you change the membership to be level based, and then charge for the staff, island, etc. and to make it worth it, throw in some nice tools a step above the god tools. cause although i bad mouthed it, i cant stop playing. also the poo magazine xp ratio is slightly skewed. the 1000 gold magazines give only 50-56 xp, but the 10000 magazine gives close to 60, or is it based off how much wolf you wolf out?
