Hex is different...you need 5k to get land(done using /landclaim) but to get 5k you basicly have to mine til you get your level high enough to mine gold, then smelt that gold into coins...if you're lucky you might have an item someone will buy but you'd have to get really lucky.  they removed selling items to npcs for some reason(that they thought was important) and it sort of wreaks havoc on crafters when they're starting out.

edit: as far as building, you either need carpentry or masonry and boards or stone to build a house.  you can check usage in game to see all the building options

I'll give you 5k. The way this server is set up... is completely unfair to new players like you.

Just log on and I will hopefully see you today/tonight.

If you are a miner go mine gold there is a ton of it. I raised the gold drops a little bit on low level monsters a while ago if you're a fighter. I know people are looking to buy potions if you're an alchemist. I would recommend buying a horse/trader before land and living off that while you start saving up. Selling to NPC's was removed because all that ever happened was one person went and sold everything to them until they were maxed out meaning that no one else could sell to them while that person made 20k on the first day. Also never said it was a "noob friendly" world so I can agree that if you haven't had experience playing before "is completely unfair to new players like you" is correct.

This ain't a wussy server, and I love it. You've done a great job.  steeltide would have been a great server for you to start on.
And I completely agree about the npc thing, I thought you were going to throw on traders that accept items for gold like you did the beefcake butchery in town. Just low amounts for ore etc. npc accepts one iron ore for 45 gold. Something like that.
And I agree with the trader thing completely.

I think Mickey added things like that when he decided not to allow npcs to buy stuff.  those npcs that worked like the collector took certain resources for small amounts of cash and allowed the server to still have an economy that worked for people who couldn't mine/smelt gold.  I know historicly smithing has been a great way to make money, but it has never been the only way...and thats what sort of broke Hex for me(I started as a cook/alchemist with noone to buy any of my potions or food because they had no cash and no npcs to sell things to it took me a while to get my mining high enough to mine gold and smelt it to buy land since I was mostly an int build).
