So.. as stated above... RA to make runes.. at least the skill would have purpose for once.

I'll admit I like the idea, but I think it would just piss most people off, and make a few mages rage quit when they can't get runes...

would be nice if RA had a real usage though

RA takes 2 skill points to learn... where as blacksmith takes 8 (usually), on top of that bs is str/dex and RA is int/wis, which would make more sense for a mage to get it, so that a mage could make runes, since mages use runes way more than melee/missle players...so i really doubt a mage would "rage quit" from being able to make their own runes much easier..

it would make it more convenient at the time, but the player economy is already way shot. if u take away a mage's need for a blacksmith.... that severely weakens players dependency on other players... might as well play a console game if u want full independance

Well, being as Read Ancient is for...well...reading the ancient language that would have nothing to do with making anything. Just because you can read the runes doesn't mean you should know how to use all the metalworking materials need to craft a Rune out of ore.

2 skill points for RA, another 4 for mining.  you then have to worry about your attributes because as you said RA is int/wis while mining is str which is usually pretty low for mages...

With blacksmith taking 8 skill points compared to RA taking 2, since mages need blacksmith for only runes to begin with, it would just help mages out with the whole /4 int & wis and seeing as magic defense is the easiest defense to train out of the 3, as far as players still relying on each other, a mage would still need ore, so miners would still be needed.

aren't most miners also smiths?  I am, and I don't know about you but I'd rather sell runes than ore...

from a mage's point of view it would be great if you could go powergame like crazy and not have it cost you a dime, but from an overall game stand point it would suck if mages could go powergame like crazy without it costing them a dime.  on a server like that you'd have everyone remaking as a mage, with noone doing anything else...the server's economy would really get Bushed

but as I said I do like the idea of RA being useful, and could see a way for it to be worked into an idea like that: use RA to 'activate' runes

for example smith makes the runes as always(maybe a blank rune) and someone with RA has to use a tool(maybe a wand) on it to get it to activate?
