What the heck?
« on: May 05, 2009, 06:18:14 pm »
So here's my deal. With all the layoffs going on, I thought it a good idea to check out the latest job skills requested for, out in the "real" world. Found out that C#.Net is big. Bigger than when I last checked... 2004? heh. So, I am forcing myself to learn C# although I tried a few times but gave up for various reasons: time, worth, cost, pez addiction, etc. I made RPGWO in VB6 cuz I wanted/needed to know it for my career. I am in that same spot with C# now so if it worked out great last time might as well repeat and make a game with C# like in VB6.

OK, so I kinda decided I want to make an Online RTS with a sci-fi theme and business based, not military. Basically, my single player Galactic Venture game but not at such detail. It would be larger scale and probably not have RPG elements in it, so much. I don't know. I am currently doing code research but haven't settled on any game idea yet. I want to hear what everyone has to offer for ideas.

As far as RPGWO goes... I plan to peridically work on it but not like before. Mostly bugs and small stuff that UT requests.

Thanks

Go for it. I played a single player game recently called Mass Effect the story was pretty cool and so was the interface and options that it had

How about just recoding Rpgwo in C# then working from it via C#, Makes you happy, Makes Us Happy.. Sounds like a good plan. Either way good luck.

No, Muffin is right... nothing is changing with RPGWO.

I am just offering the community input into a new project before it even starts. Gonna need testers and feedback soon anyway, might as well get people involved as soon as possible. Up to you to join in or not.

Also, thinking about the RPG Party idea and converting it to C# although it is fantasy but it was a pretty unique idea that I thought had promise.

There are QUITE a few MMORTS out there, why not go something unique? The possibilities with C# are literally infinite, why not try and design something that would be different from everything else. And I am not talking about the "theme." Use RTS as a baseline and build off of it, adding stuff that really interests gamers. You could probably turn this into a great ideas thread, seeing as most of us here are all about reforming rpgwo in every way possible, we have to be pretty good at innovation as well.

The only MMORTS games I can find are all browser based or turn based which pretty much makes them NON-Real Time, heh.

Got some example MMORTS games I can take a look at? They need to be persistent too, not just a short term multiplayer RTS.

For starters you need a team of people to make a good game otherwise it takes too long. For that you need a source of income or else it would just be a 1 man operation.

MMORTS out there is FFXI, Atlantica and stuff like that etc. But don't follow those examples.

As long as theres a crap load of tradeskills to do then it would be good as then even if it's wolf there will still be something to do.

My primary goal is to learn C#. Secondary is make a cool game. Same way I started on RPGWO but then once I knew VB6 well, making a cool game became primary. The only team I need is people to play/test it and give feedback and ideas and artwork.
I need to figure out a balance between RTS and RPG gameplay. I want it to have some RPG but not sure how far to take it. Like do I just have individual units have their own skills or does the user have one set of skills that apply to all your units? The second one would apply if units were mostly machines, I guess. If I did it like GV then skills would appy to your employees on an individual basis. Then you gotta have resurrection to deal with and also paying your employees. For the second case if you lost a unit, no biggy. Maybe units could improve on their own but within what your companies skills already are *shrugs*. I'll flesh something out and see what play testers say. It not written in stone.

Learn Java instead, its much cooler.

From a Windows platform stand point, Java doesn't have much market share. Not enough to light my fire. .Net is more dominant. If I were linux/unix/mainframe/web based then yes, I probably would already know java. But I am a M$ guy... AND I WEAR A SUIT! But thanks for the thought.

if you know java, you know C#.

It's called "Microsoft's Java" for a reason.

It uses the same objected-oriented style, it still passes-by-value, literally EVERYTHING about it looks like java. The only real difference is, in C# you type "using" and not "import".
